Arsenal missed the chance to move top of the Premier League after losing 2-1 to Fulham on Sunday evening.

Premier League

Result: Fulham 2-1 Arsenal

Date: 31 December 2023

Venue: Craven Cottage

Eddie Nketiah, Kai Havertz and Kiwior returned to the Gunners' line-up after the midweek defeat to West Ham United at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners got off to the perfect start when Gabriel Martinelli's shot was parried into the path of Bukayo Saka, who slotted home from close range.

The home side did put on the pressure afte falling behind and they managed to carve out a chance on 16 minutes for Raul Jimenez, who sent his shot straight goalkeeper David Raya.

Fulham did get back on level terms in the 28th minutes when Tom Cairney did well to pick out Jimenez at the far post, with the Mexican striker finishing with a composed effort.

Arteta's men finsihed the first half the stronger of the two sides, but were unable to restore their lead, with Martinelli going closest with a low strike that sailed just wide of the upright.

However, the home side completed the turnaround in the 59th minute as De Cordove-Reid was quickest to pounce on a loose ball in the box to fire past Raya.

Arteta responded with a double change for the Gunners as Martinelli and Ben White made way for Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard as they looked to get back into the contest.

The Gunners had a big chance to level matters with 11 minutes to play as Trossard did well to send a cross to the far post, but defender Gabriel was unable to make contact with the goal at his mercy.

That proved to be the final chance for the Gunners, who have suffered back-to-back defeats and will finish the year in fourth spot.
