The Valencia defender is reportedly very close to joining the Red Devils, but Mourinho is trying a last minute attempt to lure him to Chelsea.
The Portuguese is understood to have asked his super agent, Jorge Mendes to get Otamendi to Stamford Bridge, according to reports in England.
United seem still reluctant to meet Otamendi's release clause of €50 million, but Chelsea might force them now to splash out the cash to get Louis van Gaal's main defensive target.
The Argentine centre-back has already expressed his desire to leave Valencia and reportedly already agreed personal terms with United.
Mendes is also Mourinho's personal agent and has already lured Diego Costa and Radamel Falcao to West London.
