Pep Guardiola's Manchester City ended the year with a loss, as they went down 1-0 to Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday evening.
Sergio Aguero returned to the side after serving a four-game ban, while Emre Can was handed a start, with Divock Origi dropping to the bench.
The Reds broke the deadlock in the eighth minute when Georginio Wijnaldum rose above his marker to send a fine header into the top corner, following a cross from Adam Lallana.
City saw most of the ball in the as the half went on, but struggled to carve out clear-cut openings, as Liverpool were happy to sit back and soak up the pressure.
The score remained 1-0 to Liverpool as the side entered the halftime break, as Pep Guardiola's charges failed to register a single effort on target in the first half.
Liverpool suffered a blow after the hour mark when Jordan Henderson had to be substituted after picking up an injury.
The visitors continued dominate possession in the second half, with Raheem Sterling seeing a lot of the ball down the right flank, although chances were hard to come by.
Guardiola threw on Jesus Navas in the 84th minute, as the visitors pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages.
However, City could not bypass the Liverpool defence in the final stages, as the home side held on for the victory.
