The Gunners had their first real effort on goal in the 22nd minute when Olivier Giroud tried his luck from distance, but saw hi shot well-saved by Robert Green.
Ospina came to Arsenal's rescue again in the 34th minute when he superbly denied Matt Phillips from distance.
Three minutes later some swift interplay from QPR saw Austin into space just inside the box, but his low shot skimmed the wrong side of the post.
The half ended 0-0.
Arsenal took the game away from QPR in the second half and opened the scoring just after the hour mark when a quick counter-attack concluded with Giroud tapping home a Kieran Gibbs pass, 1-0.
Alexis Sanchez doubled Arsenal's lead in the 69th minute when he worked his way into the box from the flank and curled an effort into the bottom corner of the net, 2-0.
QPR tried to find their way back into the game after that and they did manage to find a consolation goal in the 82nd minute courtesy of a clinical Austin strike, but it was too little too late, 2-1.
