Just two days after the Three Lions were defeated in the 2024 UEFA European Championship final by Spain, Gareth Southgate decided to call time on his tenure as head coach of the England national team.
It was the second successive continental final that the English had lost, after losing to Italy in 2021 too.
It seems the FA are now looking to begin their search for the Watford native's successor, and according to The Guardian, the chiefs at St. Georges Park are not opposed to a foreign head coach taking the reins.
It is understood that FA chief executive Mark Bullingham went to nine fellow board members to gauge their willingness to hire a non-English coach, and it is believed he has been given the green light to begin the recruitment process.

Part of the reason for the positive reaction to a foreign coach being considered is the success the women's national team have seen under Dutchwoman Sarina Wiegman, who led the Lionesses to 2022 UEFA European Championship glory.
The same report claims that, right now, the current frontrunners for the men's job are former Chelsea managers Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel after they left their respective positions at the end of the 2023/24 season. The Argentine left Stamford Bridge at the end of June, while the German was relieved of his duties at Bayern Munich after the latest campaign.
This does not mean that the FA will not consider English tacticians during the recruitment process, though, and it is believed another former Blues boss, Graham Potter, is being considered, as well as Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe.

In the meantime, it is said that U21 head coach Lee Carsley will take responsibility of the senior side while the FA's chiefs deliberate over who to appoint full-time.
