According to the Daily Mail, the former Red Devil would be open to a move from Newcastle United following the recent injury to Nick Pope.
The 31-year-old England international has been ruled out for up for four months after he dislocated his shoulder during the Magpies' 1-0 win over United in the Premier League this past weekend.
De Gea, meanwhile, is still a free agent following his departure from the 20-time English champions in June, and is believed to be "more receptive" to a return than he previously has been.
The report claims the shot-stopper has turned down several approaches in recent months, but there are indications he would be interested in joining Newcastle.
For now, it appears Eddie Howe will need to turn to Martin Dubravka to replace the injured Pope, with the 34-year-old Slovakian having made only two appearances all season so far.
Dubravka spent the first half of the previous campaign on loan at United, but returned to the Magpies in January.

De Gea might represent an opportunity for Howe and the club's recruitment team to bring in a goalkeeper with more experience after he made 415 league appearances for the Red Devils between 2011 and 2023.
