Result: Manchester City 1-1 Manchester United

Date: 10 August 2024

Venue: Wembley Stadium

New Red Devils signing Jonathan Zirkzee was only named on the bench as Marcus Rashford started in the striker's role, supported by Mason Mount, Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo.

City, meanwhile, were a number of first teams but goalkeeper Ederson, Ruben Dias, Mateo Kovavic and Erling Haaland were named in the starting line-up.

The Citizens dominated in the early exchanges but had to wait until the 23rd minute for a big chance when McAtee pounced on a United defensive error before sending his curling effort against the crossbar.

United enjoyed a lot more possession in the final ten minutes of the first half and managed to carve out a couple big chances for Rashford and Diallo, both of whom failed to convert in the box.

The Red Devils came out firing in the second half and thought they had went ahead five minutes in, but Fernandes' stunning strike from distance was ruled out by the offside flag.

Both manages opted for changes after the hour mark, as United threw on Scott McTominay, Alejandro Garnacho and Facundo Pellestri while the Citizens introduced Mathues Nunes and new signing Savinho for his debut.

United should have broken the deadlock with 14 minutes remaining when a swift counter attack ended with Garnacho picking out Rashford, whose first-time effort crashed against the upright with only Ederson to beat.

The Red Devils got the breakthrough in the 82nd minute when Garnacho surged towards the box and cut inside before firing into the bottom corner on the edge of the box.

However, City ensured the game went to a penalty shoot-out when birthday boy Bernardo Silva popped up at the far post to nod home the equaliser from Oscar Bobb's floated cross.
