Los Blancos are facing an injury crisis, especially in defence. They have two central defenders, Eder Militao and David Alaba, as well as two right-backs, Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez, currently sidelined with various knocks.
This comes at a time when the Spanish and European champions are preparing for an intense period of fixtures, as they are set to play nine games in the space of a month once players return from the latest international break.
In a bid to avoid further injury woes, the team from the Spanish capital are carefully considering who they could recruit during the mid-season window.
While there seems to be a lot of ambiguity surrounding possible targets for central defence — with the likes of Aymeric Laporte and Castello Lukeba linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu — there is greater certainty about who they want in the right-back role.
Alexander-Arnold appears to be the undisputed candidate Los Merengues want to bring in for that position, especially with the Englishman nearing the expiry of his current contract.
The absences of their other Spanish full-backs could force Real to push for the signing at the beginning of the new year, but according to Relevo, the 26-year-old wishes to leave his boyhood club on good terms.

The same report claims that the record European champions have already started talks with the player's entourage over a possible move. However, Alexander-Arnold would prefer to fight titles with the Reds this season before making a definitive decision to leave for the Spanish capital.
