German Bundesliga
Result: Hannover 2-1 Wolfsburg
Date: 09 November 2018
Venue: HDI Arena
Hannover got their Bundesliga campaign back on track with a 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg at the HDI Arena on Friday evening.
The home side desperately needed three points heading into the clash as they were sitting in 16th spot, four points behind 15th place Nurnberg.
Wolsburg, meanwhile, were looking to climb up the ladder after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund last weekend.
The hosts eventually took the lead in the 31st minute, with Linton Maina finding the back of the net with a superb volley from distance.
Wolfsburg dominated the possession statistics in the first half, but they could not turn their dominance into goal as Hannover goalkeeper Michael Esser was largely untested.
Eight minutes into the second half, Esser was called into action as the Hannover shot-stopper produced a good save to deny Jerome Roussillon in a one-on-one situation.
However, the hosts were handed a chance to double their lead after 63 minutes when they were awarded a penalty, which Ihlas Bebou converted to make it 2-0.
Wolfsburg were awarded a penalty of their own with eight minutes remaining after Yannick Gerhardt was brought down. Wout Weghorst stepped up and converted the spot-kick to reduce the deficit.
Wolfsburg pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages of the second half, but Hannover hung to claim a vital victory.
