A 2014 FIFA World Cup winner has found himself on the wrong side of the law after being charged for an alleged assault on his former partner.

German prosecutors have confirmed that Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has been charged with the offence after allegedly attacking his former partner.
"The Munich prosecutor's office has had proceedings opened against Jerome Boateng for dangerous assault since autumn 2018. Following extensive investigations, charges were brought on 11 February 2019," chief prosecutor Anne Leiding said, as per Agence France Presse.

According to reports, the charges stem from a complaint laid by a person identified as "S", who is believed to be Boateng's former partner of 10 years, and who is also the mother of his two children.
A separate police investigation is also being conducted in respect of the alleged assault, although no court date has been set as of yet.

Boateng has made more than 280 appearances for Bayern, and was part of the Germany squad that won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
