Bundesliga Report: Union Berlin v Bayern Munich

Bundesliga Report: Union Berlin v Bayern Munich

Result: Union Berlin 1-1 Bayern Munich

Date: 12 December 2020

Venue: Stadion An der Alten Försterei

Bayern Munich needed a second-half strike from Robert Lewandowski to rescue a 1-1 draw with Union Berlin on Saturday.

Manuel Neuer was called into action straight away after Bayern were caught out at the back by a quick ball over the top of their defence and Taiwo Awoniyi raced onto the end of it, getting all the way to the penalty area and he only had Neuer to beat. However, the keeper made an excellent save, pushing it around the post.

Union took the lead in the fourth minute. Christopher Trimmel whipped a corner into the penalty area from the left and Grischa Promel met it at the near post, glancing it into the far corner of the net, with Neuer helpless as it flew beyond him and into the back of the net.

Robert Lewandowski then showed superb vision to spot the run of Serge Gnabry in behind the Union defence, he fed it through and Gnabry seemed to only have the keeper to beat, he took a touch, but then seemed to get the ball stuck under his feet and he accidentally struck it again and it went out of play.

Bayern were then caught out on the counter-attack, this time it was Sheraldo Becker who slid a low ball in-behind to Awoniyi to chase after. The striker held off David Alaba, waited for him to dive in and then tried to place it into the bottom right-hand corner of the net. However, he just dragged the shot inches wide of the post.

Union goalkeeper Andreas Luthe then made a brilliant stop to deny Coman, after he was fed through by Lewandowski and the winger only had the keeper to beat. However, he rushed off his line and smothered the ball superbly, before the defenders clear the danger.

Bayern equalised in the 67th minute. Coman did brilliantly down the left wing, he got to the byline and then dragged the ball back to Lewandowski who was lurking in the box and the striker poked it into the back of the net.

Union had a great opportunity to make it 2-1 after a quick counter and Endo had options to pass, but instead went for goal himself and tried to curl it into the bottom right-hand corner of the post. However, he didn't put enough pace on it and Neuer got down and made a good save to ensure the Bavarians came away with a point.
