Robert Lewandowski bagged four goals as Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich edged Hertha Berlin in a seven-goal thriller on Sunday evening.
The Bavarians made five changes with Jerome Boateng, David Alaba, Leon Goretzka, and Serge Gnabry all recalled alongside new right wing-back Chris Richards, who got his full debut.
The hosts were the most threatening side in the early stages but were thwarted by the brilliance of goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow and his solid defence.
Thomas Muller thought he had headed home the opener with nine minutes left of the first stanza after a teasing cross by Richards but the goal was chalked off for a marginal offside by the Video Assistant Referee.
Lewandowski eventually broke the deadlock for Hans-Dieter Flick's charges five minutes before the break with a close-range finish from a cut-back as Bayern went to the break leading by an odd goal.
Lewandowski settled the nerves for the Bavarians six minutes after the break with a clinical finish into the bottom corner to complete his brace.
However, Jhon Cordoba pulled a goal back for Hertha on the hour-mark with a powerful header past shot-stopper Manuel Neuer after a good cross by Matheus Cunha.
Cunha levelled matters for the visitors in the last 19 minutes with a strike away from Neuer after exchanging passes with Krzysztof Piatek to go clear inside the box.
Lewandowski restored the lead for Bayern five minutes before time and completed his hat-trick with a tap-in after a knock down by Muller from a free-kick.
However, Jessic Ngankam brought Hertha level again two minutes before time moments after coming on from the bench with a header past Neuer after a cross from Maximilain Mittelstadt.
With the game seemingly headed for a draw, Lewandowski snatched the dramatic winner for the hosts in stoppage time with a composed spot-kick after he was dragged down inside the box to send his side up to fourth.
