Reports suggest that one of Manchester United's key transfer targets could be snapped up by Bavarian giants Bayern Munich instead.
It was reported earlier in the week that United's manager-elect Erik ten Hag is keen on the prospect of being reunited with Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutch midfielder played under the tutelage of the 52-year-old at the Johan Cruyff during their two-year stint together at Ajax Amsterdam before De Jong made the move to Barcelona in 2019.
Reports now suggest that a number of elite European outfits are eager to acquire the Netherlands international's services, with Bayern Munich being one of them.
As per Cadena SER, the 24-year-old has articulated his desire to stay at the Camp Nou, and is aware of interest from the recently-crowned Bundesliga champions, but has not overtly dismissed the possibility of being sold should the Catalan side wish to cash in on the player.
De Jong has been substituted more by Xavi Hernandez than by previous Barca manager Ronald Koeman, but the Spaniard has insisted the former Ajax star is in his plans.
Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann has largely relied on Joshua Kimmich and Leon Gortezka in central midfield this season, with the German pair having started 60 games between the two of them.
