FIFA introduced the World Player of the Year award in 1991 to rival France Football's famous Ballon d'Or prize, which inaugurated in 1956 and is often referred to as the European Footballer of the Year accolade.
Between 2010 and 2015, FIFA and the French publication merged the two awards to hand out the FIFA Ballon d'Or, but decided to split up last year.
Instead of reverting back to their World Player of the Year format, FIFA renamed their award to The Best FIFA Men's Player of the Year prize, which Ronaldo lifted it in 2016.
The Portuguese is the favourite to win the accolade this year, which would see him draw level with his longstanding rival Lionel Messi, who has won it five times so far.
Kaka was the last player other than Ronaldo and Messi to lift the award back in 2008, while legends such as Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldinho, as well as Africa's only winner George Weah, also feature in the gallery above.

This year's award's gala, where Baroka FC goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke will find out if his dramatic bicycle kick goal will make him the first African to lift the famous FIFA Puskas Award, will be broadcasted live on SuperSport 3 from 7:00 pm, South African time.
