Cristiano Ronaldo Breaks Lionel Messi & Equals Pele Milestone

Cesar Delgado (FC Monterry) – 5 goals at Club World Cup

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has broken a Club World Cup record jointly held by Lionel Messi and five others, while also equaling a milestone set by legendary Brazilian Pele.

The Portuguese scored his side's only goal in the 1-0 final win over Copa Libertadores champions Gremio.

In so doing he became the first player to score in consecutive Club World Cup finals, while Real became the first side to defend their Club World Cup title.

Overall, it was already Ronaldo's fourth triumph at the competition – a new record, which he shares with his teammate Toni Kroos.

Both have won the three Club World Cups with Los Blancos in 2014, 2016 and 2017, while Ronaldo added another with Manchester United in 2008. Kroos, meanwhile, lifted his first in 2013 with Bayern Munich.

The Real duo have now won the most Club World Cup trophies in history and one more than a five-man group including Messi, Dani Alves, Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta.

With his goal in the semi-final against Al Jazira Ronaldo had already become the record scorer in Club World Cup history, but he now also equaled Pele's record of seven strikes in the predecessor of the tournament.

The legendary Brazilian scored seven times at the Intercontinental Cups for Santos in 1962 and 1963.

The Club World Cup title was Real's fifth trophy this year, meaning 2017 has been the most successful year in the club's history.
