8 Stars Snubbed From Ballon d'Or Shortlist

France Football announced their 30-man shortlist for the 2018 Ballon d'Or on Monday, but a few big names, including stars from Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Manchester United, were snubbed.

The French publication will hand out their prestigious Golden Ball on 3 December, with Luka Modric the favourite to complete his awards hat-trick after lifting FIFA's The Best Men's Player accolade and UEFA's Player of the Year prize.

The 30-man shortlist was put together by France Football's editorial team, and now a "jury of specialised journalists" – there were 176 last year – will vote for their favourites.

Each jury member will select his/her top five players from the 30 nominees, with the first getting six points, second four, third three, fourth two and fifth option one point.

There are three criteria the voting is based on, namely:

1. Individual and collective performances during the year.

2. Player class (talent and fair play).

3. Player's overall career.

Despite everything being so clearly explained, there were once again a few names that can feel hard done by after not making the list. Real Madrid's Toni Kroos, for example, won the UEFA Champions League and three other trophies with Los Blancos last season. He made 43 appearances for his side, scoring five goals and assisting another 10 strikes, but was not named as one of the 30 nominees.

Another snubbed star is Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea. The Spaniard was voted into the 2018 FIFA FIFPro World XI by his peers, but did not make the Ballon d'Or shortlist.

Many complaints were aimed at Karim Benzema's selection after the Frenchman scored just five LaLiga goals in the 2017/18 campaign, while the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Paulo Dybala also missed out.
