What was formerly known as the African Super League now has a commencement date, the 20th October, according to Infantino. After the tournament was drastically scaled down from 24 teams to just eight participants, the Swiss football executive revealed when the new competition will get underway.
"It will have eight great teams, which will be followed in the future with a bigger version," he told attendees, as per ESPN.
"We have to invest in African club football as well as national team football.
"It is our responsibility, duty and task, and with the work and contribution of all of us as a team, we will succeed."
While we may know when the African Football League will begin, not much else is known about the competition.
However, it was reported earlier this year that CAF had already chosen the juggernauts that will kick start it, with eight of Africa's great football nations each getting a representative for the showpiece.
Details pertaining to sponsors, broadcasters and logistics still remain a mystery, but the tournament will run concurrently with Africa's current premier club competition, the CAF Champions League.

A staggering sum of $100 million (R1.7 billion) was said to be the prize money for those competing in the competition, but it remains to be seen if indeed that is still the case.
