History Makers USM Alger Clinch CAF Confed Cup

USM Alger were crowned CAF Confederation Cup champions for the first time despite a 1-0 loss to Young Africans in the second leg of the final on Saturday night.

USMA came to the game holding the advantage of two away goals in the first-leg after edging Yanga 2-1 in Dar-es-Salaam courtesy of goals by Aimen Mahious and Islam Merili.

Yanga's only goal was scored by Fiston Mayele in the dying minutes that kept the Tanzanian side's hopes of turning things around in the second-leg.

Young Africans had a perfect start after they were awarded a penalty within five minutes from the off, after Kennedy Musonda was brought down in the box.

Djuma Shabani made no mistake for Yanga as he gave them the lead and made it 2-2 on aggregate with sure strike into the top corner.

The visitors dropped deep in their own half after that, as they soaked up the pressure from Alger and Mahious had a big chance on the half-hour mark with a free header at the back post that missed narrowly wide.

Young Africans managed to come out of a high press by USMA in the closing phase of the first stanza but they were nearly punished on the stroke of half-time after Khaled Bousseliou unleashed a low drive from a set-piece routine that was smothered by goalkeeper Djigui Diarra.

The game was open early in the second stanza and Alger had a glorious chance to restore their big advantage 11 minutes in after they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Tumisang Orebonye in the box.

However, Zinéddine Belaïd's spot-kick was saved by Diarra, who made a double save after also denying Mahious from the rebound at the near post.

Yanga refreshed their attack just after the hour-mark, as former Orlando Pirates striker Bernard Morrison came on for Tuisila Kisinda for fresh legs in upfront.

Despite the penalty scare and the away goals rule not in their favour, the Tanzanian side could not get out of their own half, as Alger continued to pile the pressure.

The game had a slight delay in the dying minutes, with fire crackers thrown into the pitch and Yanga could not get any momentum going forward with constant stoppages and the Algerian side held on to clinch the title for the first time on away goals' rule and the side in their country to do so.
