The start of the encounter had to be delayed due to police firing tear gas to control the home supporters, but the gas got onto the field which forced the Red Devils to cut their warm-up short.

There was also South African presence on the pitch as Victor Gomes officiated the match in the middle of the park along with assistant Zakhele Siwela.
After a relatively quiet opening to the half, Mosimane's charges had the ball in the back of the net when Mohamed Sherif slotted home on 30 minutes but the strike was ruled out for offside.
Esperance did manage carve out a chance of their in the first half, but goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy was on hand to make the save as the sides went into the break goalless.
Sherif squandered a golden chance to put the Red Devils ahead on 61 minutes when he failed to hit the target from six-yards out.
However, the Egyptian midfielder made up for the miss seven minutes later after latching onto a pass by Aliou Dieng before firing past Moez Ben Cherifia.
In the end, the one goal was enough to do the job for the Red Devils who also managed to keep a clean sheet heading to the second leg.
