A Kenyan football legend has praised head coach Benni McCarthy for reviving Kenyan football after their African Nations Championship (CHAN) exit.

The Harambee Stars' debut journey in CHAN ended at the quarter-final stage after losing to Madagascar in a penalty shoot-out on Friday evening.

Kenya managed to finish top of the group ahead of tournament favourites Morocco and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton star Victor Wanyama was full of praise for McCarthy and the team.

"Proud of our Harambee Stars. You played with heart, courage, and unity, reminding us that football is more than trophies—it’s about pride, passion, and resilience. Though CHAN ends here, the journey continues. Onwards and upwards," Wanyama wrote on X.

"To coach Benni McCarthy, thank you for reviving football and bringing class and professionalism. We can only wait to see what’s ahead.”

McCarthy will now switch to the upcoming FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers next month.
