Pitso Mosimane suffered his first league defeat since joining Al Ahly on Wednesday night, a result that sees his side remain behind bitter rivals Zamalek.
All Eight Teams To Have Qualified For CAFCL Quarters
Despite a dominant display at home, the Egyptian giants were defeated 2-1 by Smouha SC in the Egyptian Premier League after a late goal secured Mosimane's first league loss since leaving Mamelodi Sundowns.
Mahmoud Abdel Halim put the away side ahead in the 11th minute with a neat finish into the bottom-right corner of the net.
Mosimane's side then took control of the game as they aimed to pull a goal back, which they eventually did in the 33rd minute through 28-year-old attacker Hussein El Shahat.
The Red Devils continued to see most of the ball after finding the all-important equaliser, but going ahead would prove too difficult a task despite a host of chances to do so.
Though the match ended with Al Ahly making 550 passes compared to Smouha's 259, and with the home team seeing 68% of the ball, a late goal in the third minute of stoppage time by Hossam Hassan would seal the Premier League champions' fate on the night.
