Gomes appears to have taken the lead in the Red Giant's search for a new manager after fellow Portuguese manager Helio Sousa and German coach Kosta Runjacic were also reportedly considered.
Previous reports revealed that Gomes was one of the names shortlisted by Al Ahly to take over as manager after Swiss coach Marcel Koller was sacked following defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League semi-finals.
The latest from Saudi publication Al-Yaum reportedly said there are serious negotiations underway between the Red Devils and the former Zamalek boss to take charge of the team come the start of the FIFA Club World Cup.
There is a reported 'preliminary agreement' between the two parties and Gomes, the current head coach of Saudi side Al-Fateh, is asking for $150,000 per month (R54 000) to take over the club.
