African Nations That Won't Be At 2022 FIFA World Cup

Burkina Faso – finished Group A in second on 12 points

It has been a drama-filled sporting week for African football lovers, with South Africa's dream of qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar seemingly ending under dubious circumstances in Ghana.

Bafana Bafana, in fact, are the only African nation in the second round of qualifying to have finished tied on points with the leaders of a group, which, in their case, were the Black Stars.

Ghana progressed to the play-offs courtesy of a 1-0 win over Hugo Broos' side in Accra after the match official awarded the home side what seemed to be an incredibly soft penalty in the first half of the clash.

His decision has caused fury in the football community, with SAFA having revealed they have taken the appropriate steps to have the game reviewed by the sport's main governing body FIFA.

Controversy also surrounded Benin's clash with DR Congo earlier this week, which has led to the Benin Football Federation also lodging a formal complaint due to Congo's use of substitutes in the game.

Current FIFA rules state that teams are allowed to make up to five substitutions in a match, but only during three windows. Congo, who beat Benin 2-0, made four changes at four different times.

While those two cases are likely to be thoroughly reviewed, more big footballing nations from Africa only just missed out on making it to the third round of qualifying this week, including Ivory Coast.
