Liverpool defender Joel Matip is the high-profile name among the seven stars, who decided to reject their call-ups for the tournament between 14 January and 5 February, according to Liverpool Echo.

However, he and the other six Europe-based players, may suffer consequences from FIFA as the Cameroon federation is considering to take the matter to the football mother body.

"Seven have called the coach by telephone to notify him of their unavailability," reads a statement by the Cameroon Football Federation.

"Joel Matip does not want to play with the Lions at the moment due to a bad experience with the previous technical staff.

"These players want to privilege their personal interest to the detriment of the national team, which some of them have already used for their development. The Cameroon Football Federation reserves the right to take action against these players in accordance with FIFA regulations.

"However, the coach wants to reassure the public that he will put in place the best team possible with players who are motivated and determined to defend the colours of Cameroon."

Andre Onana (Ajax Amsterdam), Guy Ndy Assembe (Nancy), Allan Nyom (West Brom), Maxime Poundje (Bordeaux), Andre Zambo Anguissa (Marseille) and Ibrahim Amadou (Lille) are the other six players who rejected their call-ups.

It is yet to be seen whether the Cameroon federation will involve FIFA, but in theory players such as Matip could receive a ban as FIFA rules stipulate that players must respect call-ups unless they are injured.
