This past Friday, Guinea gave themselves a good chance of qualifying for the next round of the competition following a 1-0 win over Gambia.
A goal in the 69th minute from 22-year-old midfielder Aguibou Camara, who plays for Atromitos in Greece, secured all three points for the West African nation, whose victory was only their third at the AFCON in the past 10 years.
The momentous achievement led to widespread celebrations in Guinea as fans took to the streets, some sitting on car bonnets, as they drove recklessly around the Guinean capital of Conakry.
Unfortunately, however, six deaths were later confirmed by the Guinean Football Federation, with three of those being caused by two vehicles crashing into one another after travelling at a high speed.
A former international, Pascal Feindouno, has called for calm among supporters after hearing of the tragic developments.
"I have a message to send to Guinean men and women," he told the BBC.
"Rest assured that we will do something at the Nations Cup but we have learned something that will destabilise us. We learned there were deaths after the victory against The Gambia. We want this to stop because we are here to defend the colours of the country.

"Everything is going well for us at the moment so support the country but don't do anything to kill each other or oneself. Stay calm. Thank you."
