Dating back to the 24th of January 1970, the rivalry between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates has boiled over to the point of it being one of the most famous football derbies in the world. Although the games themselves have been tight affairs in recent times, Kaizer Chiefs can boast a few memorable results.
Today the Fan Park crew will look back at three memorable Soweto Derbies where Amakhosi had the upper hand, since 2010.
2010/2011 Absa Premiership Season
Orlando Pirates 1-3 Kaizer Chiefs – 13 November 2010
This was the first instalment of the Soweto Derby in this particular season and it was memorable in the sense that it was the first time Chiefs had scored three goals in the derby since the inception of the PSL in 1996.
2011/2012 Absa Premiership Season
Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 Orlando Pirates – 17 September 2011
During this period, Pirates ran riot in all competitions as they completed a domestic treble for two seasons in succession. This did not deter Chiefs in claiming bragging rights in Soweto on this occasion though, despite Bucs being in scintillating form.
2014/2015 Absa Premiership Season
Orlando Pirates 0-2 Kaizer Chiefs – 6 December 2014
This specific derby was memorable for all football fans as it was the first showpiece between the clubs following the untimely death of Bucs captain Senzo Meyiwa who was shot and killed last year. For Chiefs, it was during this period where they were at their best and remained unbeaten right until the end of the mid-season break.
