As one of the most successful clubs in South Africa, Orlando Pirates can boast a history like no other. Along with that proud history, many players, legends - as it were - became household names in Mzansi.
It’s also a tradition at the club to retire the jersey numbers of these players as they feel no one else would wear the kit with a greater meaning.
With that said, what do you think will be the next number to be retired at the club?
The most recent one we know of is the number one jersey being retired. Owned by the late Senzo Meyiwa, the club felt it was only fair the jersey rest with the player following his tragic and sudden death.
The same level of honour was placed on the number 10 jersey at the club with legends such as Jomo Sono and Steve Lekoelea having shined under the iconic number. To underline how sacred the number was viewed, Lekoelea was stripped of wearing the number 10 jersey later in his career following a string of off-field antics, which landed him in hot water.
Today we could possibly think of the number 15 jersey, which could be retired in the near future. Only big name players have worn it such as Thabo Mngomeni, Jerry Sikhosana and Andile Jali. Thabo Qalinge, who now dons the number, has big shoes to fill but is said to have the talent to grow into the illustrious number.
Also, Oupa Manyisa has been long recognised as one of South Africa’s best midfielders. At the age of 26, Ace still has the best years ahead of him and with him completely owning the number 20 jersey at the club, it too could be a number to retire in the near future.
