With Itumeleng Khune’s contract coming to an end when the current Premier Soccer League concludes, Spiderkid’s next move is yet to be made known to the Kaizer Chiefs fans. It was reported not too long ago that Amakhosi had tabled a deal for Khune to stay at the club however he is yet to put pen to paper after the offer.
Khune could be pushing for that dream move abroad by taking his time with his contract at the club, and at the age of 27, he may feel that this is his last chance at a crack abroad.
Mamelodi Sundowns were said to be interested in Itu, and are financially able to meet any demands the player puts forward. However, I don’t feel that a move to one of our bitter rivals would be his first choice if he did decide to move on.
Social media exploded earlier this year suggesting that he could even join Orlando Pirates following the shocking death of one of his best friends, Senzo Meyiwa. This is also a move I don’t see happening because of what he means to the Amakhosi fans… it would be hard seeing him in a Bucs shirt.
Last season, Khune signed for an English-based company, which could increase his chances of playing in the United Kingdom should such a move materialise.
Goalkeepers tend to find their best form beyond the age of 25 and only get better with age. I have the feeling that now is the perfect time for Itu to move abroad because he has worked himself up the list of being one of Africa’s best goalkeepers, and is in the prime of his career.
Do you think it is now or never for Khune with regards to a move abroad?
