Sundowns Don't Want To Lose Defender For 'Free'

Sundowns Don't Want To Lose Defender For 'Free'

After securing long-term deals for certain experienced players, Mamelodi Sundowns are believed to preparing to extend the contract of a defender.

Insiders familiar with the club's plans have indicated that the Brazilians are thought to be currently in negotiations with Mosa Lebusa to keep him at the club with a new contract.

The Siya sources added that the proposed deal is a two-year extension, with negotiations expected to be at an advanced stage and to conclude soon.

"They are looking at finalising everything before the New Year. They don't want to wait until it's too late. His current contract is expiring in June next year and if they reach January without the new deal then he could be free to sign a pre-contract with a team of his choice and Sundowns are working on avoiding that and that's why they want to finalise a new deal which is believed to be a two-year renewal until June 2027. So far, the talks between all the involved parties are going on well and things are looking good," the Siya source stated.

A second insider stated that Lebusa, a former Ajax Cape Town defender, has previously drawn interest from rival PSL clubs, which is why the Brazilians are keen to ensure he doesn't become a free agent.

"One of the teams that were believed to be interested in him was SuperSport United and if Sundowns don't act in time then they could lose him and it's for that reason that they are tying him up to a new two-year deal before the next transfer window period, if he has not signed a new deal by then, then he could be free. It's a two-year extension that the club is offering him and both parties seem to be happy with the conditions," the second source stated.

Mosa Lebusa, 32, joined the Brazilians in 2018. This season, he has played in a high percentage of league matches, while last season, he participated in about half due to squad rotation, as the team competed in many tournaments, including the inaugural African Football League (AFL), which Sundowns had lifted.

As Sundowns move to secure Lebusa's future with the club, a proactive approach reflects a commitment to maintaining a strong defensive department. By extending Lebusa's contract, Sundowns aim to ensure team stability and continuity as they continue to compete at the highest levels.

Soccer Laduma contacted Sundowns for comment but the club had not responded by the time this report was published.
