How The Soweto Giants’ Have Changed Roles

The PSL has had three teams in the top-flight and for a long time they have taken turns in dominating the South African football scene. But how have things changed in the last five seasons?

In a story angle more different from the usual, I have opted to take a look at the changing times the Sowetan trio has gone through over the past five years.

2010/11

Orlando Pirates (PSL Champions & Treble Winners)
League Position: 1, Points: 60

Kaizer Chiefs (Telkom Knockout Winners)
League Position: 3, Points: 59

Moroka Swallows
League Position: 13, Points: 32

2011/12

Orlando Pirates (PSL Champions & Treble Winners)
League Position: 1, Points: 58

Moroka Swallows
League Position: 2, Points: 55

Kaizer Chiefs
League Position: 5, Points: 50

2012/13

Kaizer Chiefs (PSL Champions & Cup Winners)
League Position: 1, Points: 57

Orlando Pirates
League Position: 3, Points: 52

Moroka Swallows (MTN 8 Winners)
League Position: 9, Points: 40

2013/14

Kaizer Chiefs
League Position: 2, Points: 63

Orlando Pirates (Nedbank Cup Champions)
League Position: 4, Points: 44

Moroka Swallows
League Position: 13, Points: 31

2014/15

Kaizer Chiefs (PSL Champions & MTN8 Winners – Three Games To Spare)
League Position 1, Points: 63*

Orlando Pirates
League Position 3*, Points 45*

Moroka Swallows
League Position 15*, 24*

*Position and points could change

As one can see, Pirates were dominating five years ago, winning two double trebles back-to-back. Swallows were also doing well, but since their MTN8 triumph in the 2012/13 season, the Dube Birds have had their wings clipped.

Chiefs have since turned things around and have been contending for the title in the last three editions of the Absa Premiership. Winning two titles in three years and narrowly losing out last season means that the Gold and Black are more dominant now as opposed to 2010 where they finished in third place.

In total, Chiefs have won five titles in the last five years, while Pirates have notched up seven in the same amount of time. Swallows have raked in just one piece of silverware.

This is the beauty and cruelty about football. One day you can be lifting trophies and the next fending off relegation.

Who has been your best Soweto club over the course of the last five seasons?
