With Kaizer Chiefs having claimed their fourth PSL title and breaking the points barrier by recording a milestone 66 points so far, I take a look at how the Glamour Boys won the title.
19 Game Unbeaten Run
There is no denying that Chiefs’ unbeaten run was crucial to the team’s success. If any team had to go on such a run of games without defeat they are naturally set up to win the title and this was instrumental in the title triumph.
The Mastering Of The 1-0 Scoreline
Although on paper a 1-0 results normally suggests a team has struggled to win the game, Chiefs in fact actually mastered that result. With ten 1-0 results in the 28 games played so far, Chiefs were well aware that if they scored the minimal and kept tight at the back they would take home the three points on the night. Those 1-0 wins amounted to just under half the number of points Chiefs have won this season already.
Diversity In The Midfield
With talents such as Willard Katsande, George Maluleka, George Lebese, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Reneilwe Letsholonyane in the middle of the park the team has depth in diversity. With the likes of Katsande and Yeye giving nothing away, while the others push forward, the midfield was instrumental in protecting the backline and scoring up front.
The Ability To Overcome Tricky Situations
While the season may have looked like plain sailing, it was far from the case. The team had to overcome numerous obstacles in the shape of Itumeleng Khune’s injury, George Lebese’s court case, the media constantly harassing the club about the expiring player contracts and having to deal with a number of players having traveled to Equatorial Guinea for the Africa Cup of Nations. These all brought about their own challenges and the fact that Chiefs overcame each and every makes them title worthy.
What else do you think played a part in Chiefs winning the Absa Premiership crown?
