Mamelodi: Bringing In Ramoreboli Was A Master Stroke

Mamelodi: Bringing In Ramoreboli Was A Master Stroke

Botswana national team celebrate victory during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers match between Egypt and Botswana at 30 June Stadium in Cairo, Egypt on 19 November 2024

Morena Ramoreboli, the South African coach who made history in leading Botswana to qualify for next year's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, has been lauded for his latest achievement.

With Botswana needing at least one point to ensure their qualification, they went into the game on Tuesday against Egypt as underdogs but managed to do the job following their 1-1 draw at the 30 June Stadium, courtesy of a goal by Omaatla Kebatho who scored early before the opponents equalised a few minutes later.

Ramoreboli has become only the second coach to qualify Botswana for the continent's showpiece, with the country having last been in that position in 2012.

Botswana Football League Chief Executive Bennett Mamelodi has commended the Bloemfontein-born mentor for the role he played in qualifying.

"The draw last night and our qualification to AFCON is massive for Botswana. The bringing in of Morena Ramoreboli as Interim Head Coach was a master stroke by the BFA NEC, because not only is he an exceptionally talented coach, but he knows the players and understands the culture here," said Mamelodi, speaking exclusively to the Siya crew.

"Of course, he built on a solid foundation that was laid by the previous coach, and also found a colossal technical team and back-room staff. But most importantly he found a bunch of players who made up their minds that every time they put on the national jersey, they are going to fight for the nation; and not forgetting the football loving Botswana who backed the team starting from the very top," he said.
