The story

It's widely known that Yoga increases flexibility and a person's range of motion, with an added benefit of reducing the risk of injury for footballers.

World class ballers like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Erling Haaland have all incorporated yoga into their training and recovery routines.

While it was once rare for professional footballers to practice yoga, many top European clubs now have specialist instructors, with yoga classes often being mandatory for players.

In all levels of modern football, marginal gains are becoming even more important, where footballers and clubs are constantly looking for ways to enhance their physical performance, yoga has become an increasingly important part of the game.

Cape Town Spurs, who are currently languishing in 13th place in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, after recording just two wins in their last 10 matches, exposed their players to what many athletes regard as an essential in their recovery routines.

The Urban Warriors players and staff headed to One Flow Cape Town in Greenpoint, to undergo a full Yoga and recovery session. The players got a full wellness experience with ice baths, red light therapy, a sauna session.

"It's such a great team with such a great community, you can see they all support one another, no matter what they're doing. When they're on the field, or when they're doing something social or something completely out of their comfort zone," noted Spurs' Yoga instructor on the day, Jaenae in a video shared by the club.

Captain Asanele Velebayi added: "It was unexpected, it was a great experience. It like out of this world. The recovery, the body feels ready to go again. So, it was nice man, enjoyable."
