Age will eventually catch up with you, but footballers experience that feeling of being 'past it' rather sooner than most. Fan Park takes a look at five players that have really faded this season as they get into the latter stages of their careers.
In terms of form, Toure deserves to be mentioned on this list, but it remains to be seen whether his lack of impact on games is down to age catching up on him, or simply because he no longer wants to be at Manchester City. There is no doubt that he has gone from being one of the most influential players in the Premier League to one that is making little contribution at either end of the field.
The 34-year-old has only played 230 minutes all season in the Premier League, and he has now announced that he will be leaving Liverpool in the summer. It would be wrong to say Gerrard is no longer up to playing in the Premier League, but he's clearly unable to perform the match-winning role he has taken on so often over the years.
Having been released by Manchester United at the end of last season, Ferdinand's decline had clearly begun. The 36-year-old has made only 11 Premier League appearances this season, and none since the first week of March. Clint Hill, also 36, has been preferred. The fact that Ferdinand is viewed as a worse option than a player whose previous clubs are Oldham and Tranmere says a great deal about his decline.
The American has proven to be an excellent signing for Everton, however, this season things haven’t quite gone to plan - like under his first year under Roberto Martinez. Things have gone badly downhill for the 36-year-old, to the point of him becoming a liability, as his mistakes have led to numerous goals.
Robin van Persie
The arrival of Louis van Gaal was supposed to rejuvenate Van Persie. However, his record this season is even worse than under David Moyes, with just 10 goals scored in 26 appearances to date compared - to 18 in 28 last term. Injuries have hindered his campaign, but even when fit he has looked less than threatening.
