On Wednesday night we’ll see two European heavyweights come face-to-face when Barcelona host Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final first leg, with former Barca coach, Pep Guardiola, going back home to take on the team he basically created - as well as his old teammate and friend, Luis Enrique.
Guardiola and Enrique became friends in their playing days at the Spanish giants, both showing early signs that they had a bright future in football, but they were students who’d only later become teachers.
Both of the former Barca players featured under Louis van Gaal at the club, where Chelsea boss, Jose Mourinho, was an assistant for a few seasons.
Guardiola and Enrique both started their managerial careers for Barca’s B team, with the latter replacing the former as manager of that team in the 2008/09 season.
Enrique, seen as Barcelona’s energetic engine in midfield during his playing days, shares similar traits with his long-standing friend, showing the same passion and charisma on the touchlines as Guardiola did at Barca - with both bosses also hardly giving one-on-one interviews to the press.
On Wednesday, it’ll be the first time these two meet as rivals, with Enrique hoping to show Guardiola that Barca have moved on since his departure, while Guardiola, on the other hand, will be hoping to show his former employers why his services have been so sought after.
