Broos: A Fantastic End To My Career

Broos: A Fantastic End To My Career

Hugo Broos, head coach of South Africa talks to media during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers press conference and training session for South Africa at Cape Town Stadium on 18 November 2024

Before taking on South Sudan, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has hinted as to when his possible retirement from coaching could be.

Broos has led Bafana to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations to be played in Morocco next year.

The 72-year-old has set his sights on qualifying South Africa for the 2026 World Cup, saying that achieving such a feat would be a perfect end to his career.

The Belgian has lauded the supporters for their importance in helping the team to produce results.

"Again, the most important thing is to have a crowd. This is the most important thing. We saw it in Bloemfontein and in PE, when the crowd is behind you, you can do more as a team. This is a fact. So, I will always choose the place where I know that the crowd will come. But again, and as I said already, many months before, you need results. How can you make people come to the stadium when the results are not good? This is very difficult. So now, the results are there, and little by little you see people are coming. And it is important that even now, that everything is going well with the team that they are there. If tomorrow you play for 5000 people, that is very difficult," said Broos, speaking to the media in Cape Town ahead of the match against South Sudan this evening.

"We will see in the future where we can play and where we are nearly sure to have the crowd behind us because the games that will come for the World Cup are maybe more important than what the games were now in September, October and November. Everyone wants the World Cup, and everyone wants to go. So, it certainly means the first place (is important), because that should be for me a fantastic end of my career, being at the World Cup with the national team. So, we will try to do that in the best circumstances and one of the circumstances is that the crowd has to be behind us," the coach said.
