Bafana's One Cap Wonders

Playing for one's country is an honour and many players dream of donning the green and gold colours of Bafana Bafana. However, other players are only able to amass one national cap despite their enormous talents.

Today, the Fan Park crew takes a look at former greats who have only represented the country on a single occasion.

Roger De Sa
The Mozambican-born goalkeeper stood tall between the sticks at Moroka Swallows and Mamelodi Sundowns during the pinnacle of his career, but he only managed to get one national cap under his belt in a rare appearance against Zambia in 1993. In that fixture, he conceded three goals as Bafana Bafana were thrashed 3-0 by Chipolopolo. De Sa is now the head coach of Ajax Cape Town, where he helps youngsters such as Rivaldo Coetzee to accumulate more caps than he did.

Shane MacGregor
The former Kaizer Chiefs striker was a goal machine during his heydays, but it was when he was nearing the end of his career when South Africa was re-admitted to international football. He only managed to represent Bafana Bafana on an odd occasion, making his debut against Zimbabwe in 1992 in an era when Bafana was still known as the 4x4's - owing to a weak Bafana side which mainly conceded four goals per match.

Bashin Mahlangu
The man infamously remembered for kicking the corner flag as he attempted to take a corner, was a darling amongst the Orlando Pirates faithful because of his goal-scoring prowess. However, 'Ayashisa Amateki' only represented South Africa on one occasion, at the ripe age of 34, when he came on as a substitute against Botswana in 1993. One wonders how many caps Mahlangu would have amassed if it weren’t for South Africa's ban from international football…

Grant Young
The bald-headed striker scored with endorphin inducing regularity at Hellenic but saw no fortune from the Greek Gods as his goals didn't help him to collect more Bafana Bafana caps. Young was continuously overlooked by the national team coaches, despite enjoying a great career in New Zealand where he turned out for Auckland City.

Which other former greats do you think deserved more Bafana Bafana caps?
