Following Bafana Bafana’s struggles in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, there was no doubt that coach Shakes Mashaba’s choices in defence were a bit risky. At one stage, we ended up playing with full-backs in central defence.
With that said, let’s take a look a few names that could be considered for selection in the next Bafana camp.
Not only has Masha been in great form for Kaizer Chiefs this season, but he has been an outstanding leader for Amakhosi as well. With his partner Eric Mathoho being the first choice centre-back for Bafana, reuniting with Tower can only but benefit the team - as they have been unbeatable in recent times.
Masilela is arguably the best left-back in the country, make no mistake about it. It came as a huge surprise that he was not considered for Bafana, however, it can only be an advantage having him back in the fold.
With youngsters like Ayabulela Magqwaka and Rivaldo Coetzee being called up from Ajax Cape Town, Mobara has every right to feel optimistic. Quick, versatile and with a knowledge of the game way beyond his age, Mobara’s fine form could catch Mashaba’s eye this season.
Sangweni may be much older than the aforementioned names, however, he has been rock solid for Orlando Pirates this season. At a time of change, leaders are needed and the Bafana squad could definitely make use of Sangweni’s influence in defence to guide the younger players.
What other defenders do you think should be considered for national duty?
