With the Champions League returning next week, the Fan Park decided to have a look at the competition’s leading African goal-scorers.
Didier Drogba - 44 Goals
The big Ivorian heads the list of all-time Champions League top goal-scorers hailing from Africa, and he is actually 10th overall – an amazing achievement. Along the way, Drogba represented Marseille, Galatasaray and Chelsea, with most of his goals being scored for the London club.
Samuel Eto'o - 30 Goals
Currently at Sampdoria, Eto’o is another African star who can be proud of his accolades. Eto’o is the second highest African goal-scorer in history. Eto’o is 17th on the all-time list and has represented some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
George Weah - 11 Goals
Quite a far way off from Drogba and Eto’o, George Weah is in at third with his 11 goals, playing for AC Milan and Paris Saint Germain. The Liberian politician was the first African to have won the FIFA World Player of the Year.
Emmanuel Adebayor 11 Goals
The Tottenham Hotspur man is fourth on our list. He has represented major clubs like Arsenal and Real Madrid, but the 30-year-old’s career has stalled at Spurs, where he hasn’t been much of a feature.
Seydou Doumbia - 10 Goals
The Ivorian, who joined AS Roma in January, is fifth on the list with his 10 goals. All of his goals came when he was playing CSKA Moscow - where he had an impressive record, which captured the eye of his new coach Rudi Garcia.
Benni McCarthy - 9 Goals
At six is our former Bafana international, Benni. Along with his nine goals, he won the competition with Jose Mourinho’s Porto, where he was instrumental in the Portugal club's success.
