It started after the 2003/04 season, after finishing fifth in the league table, a season characterized by tears and sorrows, when the likes of the players' favourite fan, Makhala Njalo, would cry week in and week out, as the team went through difficult times.
At the beginning of the 2004/05 season, Pirates brought in Kostadin Papic, who turned things around, bringing back the type of football that many Buccaneers fans had missed for years.
It was a brand of football that brought back smiles to the fans like Makhala Njalo, and the players in Tso Vilakazi, Gift Leremi, Cheeseboy Mokoena, Joseph Makhanya and Lelo Mbele. And from the crying people, we became, 'The Happy People'.
Though the team didn't collect any silverware under Papic, they acquired a brand of football that would grow as years went on, leading to consecutive trebles later.
We have played in all the cup finals under the PSL since 2010, and these roots were laid during those days, when we became the Happy People.
Long Live the Happy People, Long Live!
