Coach Eric Tinkler has an interesting task to address this season and it's one which may have him scratching his head already. Having Mpho Makola, Menzi Masuku and Thabo Rakhale as attacking midfield options may look exciting on paper, but, in practice, all is not that straightforward.
Makola, who was a regular for Pirates last season, has seemingly been relegated to the bench due to the emergence of Rakhale. Masuku is the new super-sub, becoming a change-changer off the bench since his induction to first-team football.
Here is how it could pan out for these three particular players.
Mpho Makola
In my opinion, I don't see Makola being a starter this season simply because there are players who have overtaken him in terms form and progress. Another name that stands in his way is Sifiso Myeni, who has been brilliant in recent times. Makola is utilised as a winger despite being a No. 10 by trade, but with the out-and-out wingers on form, he may have a difficult campaign trying to, once again, break into the first team.
Menzi Masuku
The pint-sized playmaker is an exciting prospect each and every Bucs fan wants to see playing, but with Oupa Manyisa ahead of him in attacking midfield, he may be forced into a different role. That could include becoming a makeshift winger like Makola or remaining an impact option off the bench.
Thabo Rakhale
I don't see Rakhale being taken out the starting line-up any time soon. Jomo is improving game by game and is slowly becoming an all-round winger. After doing enough to convince Tinkler that he not just a trickster, Rakhale's form is the last of the coach's worries.
