The iconic ground is considered to be one of football's greatest arenas, but after many upgrades over recent years, it has been heavily neglected by the local council.
The stadium, which cost about £500 million (R8.3 billion) to redevelop, is in such a bad state none of the professional teams in Rio de Janeiro play there.
A lot of looting has taken place at the arena in recent months, and it's been reported that there are more than 7 000 seats missing, while the catering areas have apparently been stripped bare too.
