We are all used to watching the big three run on the field week in and week out, whether it be in the PSL or in CAF competitions. On top of this, the three big teams usually come out victorious, and if they get beaten, it's usually not by more than a pair of goals. However, this is not always the case.
Today, Fan Park embarks on a little history lesson and searches for the record defeats of Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, and Kaizer Chiefs. Which one of these do you think is most embarrassing?
Kaizer Chiefs
The Glamor Boys' most thorough throbbing came from their archrivals Pirates in a 5-1 defeat back in 1990. This record was not a first, though, as Amakhosi had also lost by the same margin back in 1987 to Amazulu. We're not sure which one of these teams it hurts more to be beaten by for the Amakhosi faithful.
Orlando Pirates
The Buccaneers' record loss came in the same year that they handed Chiefs their 5-1 destruction - clearly, it was the year of goals... Pirates' record loss came in the form of a 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns in the BP Top 8 Cup in 1990. Sundowns have a nasty habit of dishing out goals in competitions, who remembers the 24-0 cricket score Sundowns handed to Powerlines F.C. in the 2012 Nedbank Cup? It's worth repeating... 24-0 in a football match: a new record, previously held by Amazulu when they beat Bizana Lucky Stars 16-0 back in 1976.
Mamelodi Sundowns
Interestingly, The Brazilians are the only team in this three-way list that did not suffer their record loss at the hands of one of the other two. Sundowns also, as described above, hold the record for the biggest ever victory in South African football history, furthermore, the Brazilians are the only team in this list to have equaled their record loss on three occasions. This is a breathtaking feat..
The first record loss came in July 1987 with an old giant of South African football, Hellenic F.C recording the 5-0 scoreline. This feat was achieved again with a 6-1 loss to Africa Sports FC from Ivory Coast in the 2000 CAF Champions league, and then, one more time, when the sky proved to not be the limit in a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Bloemfontein Celtic in April last year.
Which one of these defeats do you think is the most embarrassing? Can we expect another record anytime soon?
