Kaizer Chiefs Have Only Had Four Strikers With 11+ Goals Since 2004/05

Kaizer Chiefs Have Only Had Four Strikers With 11+ Goals Since 2004/05

2018/19 - Billiat: 5 (So far)

It seems a long time since Kaizer Chiefs fans saw a striker firing left, right and centre in the Absa Premiership, but where did it all start to go downhill?

Take a trip down memory lane and check all Chiefs' top scorers since that famous Mbesuma year in 2004/05 in the gallery above!

Cast your mind back to the 2004/05 season when a young Collins Mbesuma ripped the league apart as he scored in fifteen different games, grabbing two hat-tricks and six braces on the way to becoming the highest scoring player the league has ever seen.

Now, in 2018/19, the Glamour Boys have Khama Billiat as their top scorer with five goals to his name so far and just five matches still to play before the season comes to a close, and the club hasn't had a player reach double figures in the league since Bernard Parker hit 10 in 2013/14.

Chiefs – other than the last three (almost four) seasons – have continued to win trophies despite their lack of real goalscorers, but the problem does seem to be getting worse as the numbers look less pretty every year.

In 2010/11 things were looking up with Knowledge Musona as he smashed 15 goals in for the Amakhosi, and then the likes of Parker and Lehlohonolo Majoro kept the ball rolling a little bit as they both reached double figures in the three years that followed.

From 2014/15 though, no Chiefs player has scored more than seven in a single league campaign, and last year's top scorers – Parker, Ryan Moon and Gustavo Paez – got just four each as the Glamour Boys finished in third place.

Now, looking at the current Chiefs squad available to Ernst Middendorp, fans will be wondering who can possibly end their striker crisis, a problem that has been prevalent for a number of years now, especially given the size and stature of the club.

While goalscoring has been a problem in South African football, the fact that Chiefs have only had three players score 11+ in a season since that Mbesuma masterclass a decade and a half ago should be a worry.

With the next transfer window approaching, who do you think Chiefs could sign to help bring some goals to their strikeforce for 2019/20?
