The story

Former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates defender Mark Fish competed in his first full Ironman triathlon race on Sunday, taking on the grueling challenge to raise awareness for a worthy cause.

The 20th Ironman African Championships took place at Hobie Beach in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape and included a hefty prize pool exceeding R3 million.

Fish joined more than 2 000 athletes, including 80 elite professionals, at the picturesque course, testing his fitness limits in the demanding triathlon.

The ex-Lazio and Charlton Athletic star took part in the Ironman to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children, supporting the Ironman4thekids charity.

This non-profit organization, backed by Ironman, works to create a better future for children from primarily disadvantaged backgrounds. One example of their work includes funding a bus and its maintenance to help children travel to school.

Since its inception in 2005, the charity has raised over R34 million and supports around 22 children's charities across the country.

The 3.8 km sea swim, 180 km bike ride, and 42.2 km run proved too challenging for the 51-year-old legendary defender, who had to withdraw during the biking leg.

"Celebrating the good and the difficult days of life...Dehydration and one of the toughest moments in my life to make the decision to stop after experiencing severe cramping for the first 24km on the bike," he said on Instagram and took the opportunity to thank his partner, coach and the aforementioned charity for their support.

"Thank you to all Celesti Azor (his significant other) for your love and compassion and to my remarkable coach @ironman_michi and everyone @ironman4thekidz, especially Julia you are a rockstar."
