Atlas Lions Asking About Pirates Coach Riveiro?

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro is believed to have received interest from a new national team, this time it is one based in Africa, the Siya crew has been informed.

Soccer Laduma previously reported how teams in Finland and Sweden were linked to Riveiro, while Pirates were still hoping to get the Spaniard to renew his contract.

Riveiro's contract expires at the close of this season, and the head coach has preferred to discuss the matter at the end of the campaign.

Insiders close to the Buccaneers and privy to reliable information have indicated that the Morocco FA has now enquired about Riveiro for the Atlas Lions job.

The insiders added that the Morocco FA is looking at Riveiro as the one who could take over from current coach Walid Regragui whose three-year contract is believed to be coming to an end in June 2025.

"You know his former assistant at Pirates Sergio Almenara has joined the Finland national team which is still interested in Riveiro but now the Morocco national team is believed to be considering him as well. Those are the other things which are apparently believed to be delaying him to commit to Pirates at the moment. He is in demand somewhere else and it's hard to make a quick decision," the insider told the Siya crew.

A second Siya source stated that what is tempting about the Morocco national team job is that it's close to home.

"It's believed that he has been missing home off late and Morocco is closer to Spain and with national team not playing all the time when compared to clubs, then he could have time to visit home. That's how it seems to have an advantage at the moment," the second insider stated.

Soccer Laduma contacted Pirates to comment on Riveiro's position but the club had not responded by the time this report was published.

It is understood that with Regragui's contract with Morocco is expected to expire in June this year, further fueling speculation that the FA is looking at new options, with Riveiro among the candidates. The prospect of coaching a national team like Morocco, who reached the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finals, would mark a significant milestone in the Spaniard's career.
