Mamelodi Sundowns got back to winning ways in the Betway Premiership with a 3-0 victory over Cape Town City on Wednesday night.

Date: 30 October 2024

Venue: Loftus Versfeld

The Brazilians had Lucas Costa Ribeiro back in the starting line-up as Tashreeq Matthews missed out, while goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and Peter Shalulile were also recalled.

City, meanwhile,

Coach Manqoba Mngqithi was not happy with the fact that his side failed to register a single effort on goal in the loss to Polokwane City on Sunday as the team came out with a bit more purpose on the ball.

It was no surprise that it was Sundowns who broke the deadlock after 17 minutes when Shalulile grabbed his first league goal of the season with an impressive strike that left Darren Keet with no chance.

Eric Tinkler's charges were by no means out of the contest and it remained a tight affair even after falling behind, despite Ribeiro causing a bit of trouble with his dribbling on the flank.

However, Sundowns doubled their lead eight minutes before the interval as Ribeiro got his name on the score-sheet by turning home a cross from Mudau.

Tinkler reshuffled the Citizens pack for the second period, as Thamsanqa Mkhize and Daniel Amato replaced Fortune Makaringe and Luyolo Slatsha.

The Brazilians carried that momentum into the second half and got their third goal, as Iqraam Rayners turned provider to set up Shalulile who made no mistake from close range to complete his brace.

With Sundowns comfortably leading, Manqoba Mngqithi was able to withdraw Ribeiro and Neo Maema with one eye on Saturday's clash against Kaizer Chiefs in the Carling Knockout, as Arthur Sales and Divine Lunga were introduced.

The clash did end on a sour note for the visitors, who were reduced to ten men when Aprocius Petrus was given his marching orders in the final ten minutes.

Here's how they lined up:

Mamelodi Sundowns: Williams, Kekana, Aubaas, Mvala, Mudau, Modiba, Maema, Allende, Ribeiro, Rayners, Shalulile

Subs: Onyango, De Reuck, Coetzee, Lunga, Morena, Mkhulise, Kodisang, Lorch, Sales
