The story

Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo relived the moment he was surprisingly dropped by Clive Barker from the national team for a 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

As mentioned by Doctor, he had been in the United States for three months at the time he was overlooked for selection for a Bafana Bafana clash against Zambia.

"I went to play in the U.S. They [Bafana Bafana] went to play Zambia in Zambia. I was not called to the national team for the first time because they said I gained weight," laughed Doctor in his latest Doc Diaries podcast episode with Andile Ncube.

"Staying in the U.S for three months and y'all are saying I gained weight?" jokes the legend, exploding with laughter when looking back on the incident.

"It was the food there, it was just a little bit of gains. They went to play in Zambia in a World Cup Qualifier and it was our second last game. I was not part of the team, they lost.

"Believe it or not, after the game, the first person to call me was Clive. And he said; 'I think I made the biggest mistake of my life by excluding you. Even though we knew you would gain a little bit of weight but your presence would have made a difference,'" shared the South African football icon, who was capped 50 times by Bafana Bafana.
