In recent weeks, Al Ittihad have been linked with a move for the Belgian playmaker.

The 33-year-old is approaching the final year of his current contract with Manchester City and has previously hinted at the possibility of making the transition to the oil-rich kingdom.

Having acquired the services of Karim Benzema and N'Golo Kante during the previous off-season, new head coach of the nine-time Saudi Pro League champions, Laurent Blanc, is believed to be keen on bolstering his squad with the services of the Drongen native.

According to the Daily Star, De Bruyne was in discussions with the Public Investment Fund-owned outfit and even agreed a three-year contract worth £156 million (R3.6 billion) in principle, but following consultation with his wife, Michele De Bruyne, the trophy-laden midfielder decided against making the move in this transfer window.

The same report indicates that the reason for this is because the married couple have reservations about how their family would adapt with living in Saudi Arabia, having spent so long in England, especially their eldest son, Mason Milian.

As a consequence, the 105-cap Belgium international will play the 2024/25 season with the Citizens, with the Premier League champions believed to be eager to discuss the potential of extending his contract once he returns for pre-season.
