The ex-England captain was reportedly set to spend the whole month working as a pundit in Germany as part of the BBC's coverage of the tournament.
His plans have had to change, however, after being appointed as Plymouth Argyle's head coach at the end of May, with his side set to take on South Africa's Pirates on 12 July in a friendly as preparation for next season.
On Wednesday, the former striker confirmed he is set to return to England on Thursday as "the lads are back in on 3 July so I'll be home and straight down to Plymouth".
Co-pundit Gary Lineker then asked the 38-year-old about his team's opening fixture of the EFL Championship, which will be against Sheffield Wednesday away from home, to which he replied: "The excitement was there today. When you see the fixtures you're looking through the opening games, the Christmas schedule and stuff. I'm really excited."
This is Rooney's fourth job in management since retiring from professional football, having last worked for Birmingham City.
